Not because it’s our country, but because of what we’ve tasted in various latitudes, we must have some of Portugal’s most delicious gastronomic specialties, which you can easily find and taste here in Lisbon.
For example, it’s no news to anyone that Lisbon has the best custard tarts, the most typical Bacalhau à Brás and even the most incredible Portuguese Stew we’ve ever tasted.
Obviously, we haven’t tried these gastronomic specialties from Portugal in every place in the city, but we’ve tasted enough to have found the ones that will also leave your mouth watering.
Since the best roast suckling pig until crispier croquette, these are Portugal’s best specialties in Lisbon:
Table Of Contents
The best pastel de nata
Let’s start with one of the most “controversial” topics in Portuguese pastry: where do you eat the best pastel de nata in Lisbon?
A Confeitaria da Glória, in Amadora, was the big winner of the 14th edition of “O Melhor Pastel de Nata”, but we have our favorite, which we have the pleasure of eating almost every week.
After having done this route with the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon, which still has a lot of growing to do, we decided that Manteigaria’s pastel de nata is the one that fills us up the most.
Address: Chiado, Time Out, Rua Augusta, Alvalade and Bethlehem
The best seafood
From the sweets we move on to the flavors of the sea, with some of the most incredible seafood we’ve ever tasted.
Pinocchio e Trinidad recently renovated and reopened, while the Ribadouro Brewery is celebrating 75 years at the service of the city of Lisbon.
But for now, our hearts still belong to Ramiro Brewery, which always appears as the first option when someone talks about going out for seafood.
Address: Avenida Almirante Reis 1H (Intendente)
The best Portuguese Stew
Our list of restaurants serving the best Portuguese Stews in Lisbon isn’t very long, but this is where you’ll find our favorite Cozido à Portuguesa, which is Tasquinha do Lagarto, where the rice and, of course, all the sausages, are to die for.
Address: Rua de Campolide 258 (Alvalade)
The best Bairrada-style Suckling Pig
This was one of the most difficult decisions on this list, between Dom Leitão, Afonso dos Leitões and Eliseu dos leitões, but as we had to choose just one, our decision had to be for Eliseu, where the entire space is dedicated almost exclusively to this Portuguese specialty.
Eating at Eliseu dos Leitões, which you can now also find in the center of Lisbon, on Avenida da Liberdade and Rua Duque de Palmela, is like taking a trip to the center of Portugal, without too many adornments and with a unique simplicity.
As for the sauce, you’ll really have to set your table and taste it!
Address: Rua Álvaro Benamor 2, 2B (in Carnide you can park at the Colombo Shopping Center); and on Avenida da Liberdade at Rua Duque de Palmela
The best croquette
This was another of the most complicated decisions to make when choosing one of Portugal’s best-loved specialties. After all, what’s the best croquette you can eat in Lisbon?
There are so many good places that choosing just one will give you a lot to talk about in social media comment boxes.
So if you don’t agree with our choice, please tell us what your favorite croquette in town is.
For us, the Pastry Versailles is worth the trip. They’ve been one of the most requested products in this house for many years, and when we go there we always choose to eat the little ones… in a double dose, of course!
Address: Avenida da República 15A (Saldanha)
The best bifanas
Some people like nails in the bread, but we’re more fans of pork, with that sauce that always makes us want more and more. We love bifanas!
And the best bifana, Portugal’s specialty, is not from Vendas Novas. For us, the best are Bifanas do Afonso, which have everything you want in a delicious meat sandwich, full of sauce and, if you like, with a little house mustard.
To go with it, of course, a nice cold imperial!
Address: Rua da Madalena 146 (Lisbon Cathedral)
The best Bacalhau à Brás
Cod is one of the most widely consumed fish in our country and therefore ends up being one of Portugal’s greatest gastronomic specialties.
In Lisbon, it’s at the Laurentina restaurant that you’ll be able to taste the best Bacalhau à Brás, in our opinion, of course.
Address: Avenida Conde Valbom 71 A (Avenidas Novas)
The best francesinha
Francesinha isn’t even a typical dish in Lisbon… in Porto it’s a real treat! But because it’s one of Portugal’s gastronomic specialties, of course it had to appear on this list.
It’s not that easy to find a place in Lisbon to eat a good francesinha, but if you go to Imperial de Ourique, you can be sure that you’ll be served this delicacy very well.
Address: Rua Santo António à Estrela 106A (Lapa/Estrela)
