In summer, walks and getaways dominate our attention more than ever. However, the best thing about living in Lisbon is that you don’t have to go far to (re)discover truly enchanting destinations, such as Pia do Urso.
Located in the parish of São Mamede, in the municipality of Batalha, right in the heart of Portugal, this village is about 130 km from the capital. So you only need a little over 1h30 hours by car to get there. For those looking for peace and contact with nature, this is the perfect refuge.
What is the origin of this curious name?
Portugal has been home to several grizzly bears. In fact, contrary to what you might think, this species still lives out in the open on the Iberian Peninsula. All you have to do is cross the border into Spain. For example, in the Asturias area there are several bears that live in the wild.
However, in Portugal the reality is different, with only one specimen having been spotted in the northern region in 2019. All this to say that, although this village owes its name to a legend, it’s not absurd to imagine bears in the country.
But back to the Pia do Urso village. According to local beliefs, in th 18th century, the place was known for being frequented by bears, who sought food and water in the area. According to legend, bears quenched their thirst in small natural sinks formed in rocks, hence the name – Pia do Urso.
Rehabilitation & Pia do Urso Sensory Ecopark
The village has always attracted visitors due to the beauty of its natural surroundings. For example, in the 19th century. XIX, it was especially sought after by those looking to enjoy a outdoor picnic. Today, there is a sense of harmony between the past and the present.
In other words, the village preserves the legends of yesterday in harmony with its current focus as a recreational and leisure space. In 2016, Pia do Urso was given a new lease of life thanks to a refurbishment project, giving it the picturesque look it has today.
In this context, stone houses and cobbled streets are particularly impressive for those who only live surrounded by buildings and high-rises. However, the main attraction is something else, namely the Ecoparque Sensorial (Sensory Ecopark).
The first park of its kind in Portugal
With free access and open 24 hours a day, the Sensory Ecopark offers an immersion in nature and has been designed especially for blind people. In fact, this is the first park of its kind in Portugal.
Along a route of around 800 meters, visitors can explore and amplify their other senses, thanks to the different textures, sounds and aromas. A different and inclusive experience that calls for everyone to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Pia do Urso also has local accommodation, restaurant options and guided tours for those who want to learn more about the village’s traditions. A ‘hidden’ refuge in the heart of Portugal, which could be your next destination for a weekend or an evening well spent!
