If there’s one thing that locals can’t do without, it’s a religious breakfast in a traditional pastry shop, usually a piece of toast trimmed with butter, accompanied by a galão or abatanado. And, of course, coffee, which can never be missing, either at the beginning or at the end of the most important meal of the day.
But who says breakfasts have to be the same every day? Nobody, which is why we went in search of alternatives to traditional breakfasts in Lisbon.
In these places in the city you’ll be able to eat much more than just toast and coffee with milk.
Here you can enjoy pancakes, eggs Benedict, avocado toast, natural juices and, of course, the always obligatory coffee to give you energy for the rest of the day.
Come with us on this gastronomic journey to the most important meal of the day.

The atmosphere is welcoming and modern, perfect for starting the day with a specialty coffee and natural juice, in the true spirit of French pastry in Lisbon.

STO Mercearia
STO Mercearia is reminiscent of one of those small grocery stores that used to exist everywhere, usually with almost all the essential products for everyday life.
But with a passion for national gastronomy, the owners of STO decided to elevate this space in downtown Lisbon to something more, making it one of our favorites for breakfast.
We therefore highlight the various products that you can consume right at the start of another working day, from croissants, various types of toast, scrambled eggs or eggs with alheira and, of course, the traditional morning drinks, such as juices, coffees, cappuccinos and half-milks.

Dear Breakfast
One of the cafés in the Dear Breakfast chain was considered one of the most instagrammable in the world, but that’s not the only reason it deserves a mention on our list.
The range of products on offer to start your day full of energy is incredible, with a more than complete breakfast including croissant, granola, eggs (scrambled, boiled, poached, fried or omelette), tea or coffee, orange juice or smoothie.

Pão da Esquina
When Chef Vítor Sobral decided to open his Pão da Esquina stores, we knew good things were coming, which clearly included breakfasts.
Our most recent visit was to Pão da Esquina in Alvalade, which has brought many new features to these stores.
Here, in the Alvalade district, you’ll not only find wonderful bread, but also a wide variety of products for your breakfast , including the Arrebita Menu, which includes bread, croissant, butter, ham, cheese, orange juice and coffee or half a glass of milk, for €7.50.

Gleba
Bread is an obligatory part of any breakfast, right? And the bread from the Gleba bakery is one of our favorites. You can’t help but like the quality of the products that come out of this place.
And it was during our visit to the Gleba store in Cascais that we sampled some of their offerings, with a loaf that it would be a crime not to include on this list.
If you like to have breakfast at home, then our best suggestion is to opt for Gleba’s wide variety of breads.
