But in addition to the famous sea beaches, which range from Caparica à Ericeira, passing through Guincho, there are also some river beaches near Lisbon, more unknown and quiet, that take advantage of the waters of the Tagus, where there are always many activities for you to enjoy.
On the south bank or in the Ribatejo, we’ve discovered a handful of places that you really must visit.
The waters, although not crystal clear, are usually very pleasant for a refreshing dip.
And don’t forget to spread out your towel, enjoy the views and at least get your toes wet.

Moinhos Beach in Alcochete
The Tagus river and a relatively long stretch of sand make this beach one of the most popular places in Alcochete during the summer.
It owes its name to the windmills (now deactivated) that exist in the area, helping to create a very different scenery from the sea beaches .
In recent years, it has become well known among wind sports enthusiasts, such as kitesurfing,and has even gained aresort on the outskirts with an infinity pool and everything .
The municipality of Alcochete also has the Praia Fluvial do Samouco, as well as its salt flats, where there is a pedestrian circuit, a children’s playground and a picnic area.

Rosário Beach in Moita
From the capital, in around 45 minutes (if the traffic helps) you can reach one of the most attractive river beaches near Lisbon, , in the municipality of Moita.
With about a kilometer of sand, it has beach facilities, a summer library, showers, a picnic area and a children’s playground.
Next to the river there is also a restaurant, Baía Tejo, with good views and a very tempting menu.

Alburrica River Beach in Barreiro
Beach with fine, clear sand , where three traditional windmills, which bear witness to the milling past of this part of Barreiro: the Gigante windmill, the Nascente windmill and the Poente windmill.
As well as being very clean, it is equipped with showers, a maintenance circuit, a volleyball court, a spider for children to play on and a parking lot in the surrounding area .
Bathing is not recommended here, but not forbidden.

Valada River Beach in Cartaxo
The riverside village of Valada, in the municipality of Cartaxo, in the heart of the Ribatejo, offers this small but one of the most pleasant river beaches near Lisbon, located on the right bank of the Tagus.
It has a picnic area with grills, a children’s playground, a pier and a maintenance circuit.
On the other side of the river is the fishing village of Escaroupim, created in the mid-1930s by fishermen from Praia da Vieira (Marinha Grande), who came seasonally (in winter) to fish in the Tagus.

Praia Doce, in Salvaterra de Magos
Situated between the town of Salvaterra de Magos and the fishing village of Escaroupim, 70 kilometers from Lisbon, it is a quiet beach surrounded by vegetation growing on the banks of the Tagus.
It has a picnic area, tables, toilets and a sandy beach.
Renovated in 2015, it is also known by the locals as “Praia Dos Tesos”.
