It stretches for a kilometer and a half and, before becoming Avenida da República, was Avenida Ressano Garcia.
It was only after the proclamation of the Republic that its name was changed to its current toponym on November 5, 1910, a month after its establishment.
It is the central axis of Avenidas Novas and undoubtedly defines the life of this neighborhood, as some of the city’s must-see places are located here.
We’re going to discover some must-see stops, starting in Saldanha and ending in Entrecampos.

Chicken
When it comes to eating out of hours, often the answer comes in unison: Galeto!
The menu offers a varied selection of traditional food, ideal for enjoying at the counter while chatting the night away.
Open since 1966, it remains one of the most emblematic places in Avenidas Novas.

Bingo Belenenses
Although it’s not exactly on Av. da República, Bingo do Belenenses is worth the short detour.
Inaugurated in 1986, is one of the largest venues in the country and is still played here bingo with the same enthusiasm as before.
There’s no shortage of €1 cards, a commendable bar service and lots of fun.

Versailles Bakery
There are many good reasons to visit Pastry Versailles: the space is beautiful, the decoration art nouveau is admirable and the cakes are delicious.
Inaugurated in 1922, this pastry shop served, and continues to serve, as the cultural and social hub of Avenidas Novas: it was the first great café in the neighborhood.

Versailles Ice Cream Parlor
In 2017, the iconic Pastelaria Versailles opened a few meters next door to its parent company, an artisanal ice cream shop with more than a dozen flavors made with fresh ingredients from local producers .
There are also crepes, coffees and chocolates in a space that is more modern and colorful than the original.

Choupana Caffé
It is a café, bakery, grocery store and pastry shop and has become known for having one of the brunches most desirable in the city.
In a relaxed atmosphere, at Choupana Caffé you can eat croissants, bagels, drink natural juices, among many other delicious snacks.
Open since 2012 on Av. da República, it is also in Parque das Nações, Avenida João II and Estádio José de Alvalade.

The Portuguese Bakery
After five years as a space dedicated to product development and innovation, it returns with a new image, in line with the identity of the brand’s other stores.
A Padaria Portuguesa’s innovation and product development center remains in this new space. There you’ll find bakery and pastry chef Paulo Cardoso and chef Tomás Borges, who are responsible for the creativity and product innovation that A Padaria Portuguesa regularly presents.

Euromúsica
Operating since 1987, Euromúsica is a store specializing in musical instruments and professional audio.
If you’re a musician, amateur or professional, you’ll certainly have stopped by here in search of a new pedal for your guitar or some drumsticks to debut on a special occasion.
The big music brands can be found here, from Fender basses to Yamaha grand pianos.

Petiscaria da Esquina
Chef Vítor Sobral has opened a new space in Lisbon and the result is a snack bar, a Petiscaria da Esquina.
In addition to one of the most complete snack menus we’ve ever seen in the city, this place on Avenida da Repúblico also offers a varied wine list to go with it… and there’s also a Happy Hour between 3pm and 8pm, with emperials for 1 euro.
