When it comes to Japanese food in Lisbon, one name frequently tops the list of top recommendations: Yakuza by Olivier. With a prime location in the heart of the capital, on Rua Júlio César Machado, near Avenida da Liberdade, this is one of the hottest spots for lovers of premiumsushi and also the setting for a recent dining experience by the Lisboa Secreta team.
Driven by a desire to further explore the unmistakable fusion of flavors between East and West—which so perfectly captures the essence of Yakuza by Olivier’s menu—we embarked on a delightful culinary journey full of contrasts. Surrounded by a sophisticated atmosphere that invites you to linger and enjoy the space, the dishes were served by a very attentive staff; some were presented with a dry-ice smoke effect, and all were meticulously and carefully selected by the chef.
Contrasting flavors and signature dishes
To kick off the dining experience in the best possible way, a platter of assorted sashimi and a selection of perfectly balanced signature cocktails signaled that our team was in for more than just an ordinary meal. Shortly thereafter, one of the first big surprises arrived at the table: a scallop grilled in its shell with a buttery soy sauce, tomato, and cilantro (€16). Here, the perfect texture and delicate sauce served as the ideal introduction to what was to follow.
Various dishes showcased a high level of execution, combining traditional Japanese precision with the irreverence and creativity so characteristic of Chef Olivier da Costa’s concept . But among the various dishes, two in particular surprised our team: the Tuna Kari Kari ( €14 / per serving), which stands out for its crispy base that contrasts with the fish; and the Real Wagyu Burger (€24).
This dish, in particular, stands out for incorporating Wagyu beef and caviar into the bread, emerging as an unexpected alternative on a menu where raw fish is usually king—yet proving that irreverence knows no bounds.
Known as one of the city’s Asian classics, Yakuza by Olivier falls into the higher-end dining segment , a positioning that reflects the carefully selected ingredients and the meticulous preparation of every course. But for those who can or wish to savor high-quality Japanese cuisine, the dining experience promises to make every cent spent well worth it.
