Caldo Verde soup, at A Merendeira
When you think of Caldo Verde, A Merendeira in Santos automatically springs to mind.
Finely chopped cabbage, tasty potatoes, a meaty chorizo sausage and everything served steaming hot .
This caldo verde has comforted us many times in the early hours of the morning and we hope it continues to do so, always accompanied by bread with chorizo.
Address: Avenida 24 de Julho 54 (Santos)
Chicken soup at A Valenciana
A Valenciana, in Campolide, is well known for its Portuguese gastronomy and some say it’s home to the best roast chicken in Lisbon.
The Canja de Galinha (chicken soup ), reminiscent of our grandmothers’ recipe,is also very good.
Address: Rua Marquês de Fronteira 157 (Campolide)
Miso Tonkotsu no Magokoro Ramen
Our first spotlight on Asian soups goes to some of our favorite ramens, those from Magokoro Ramen, which now has a new location near the Amoreiras Towers, joining the already busy space next to Santa Apolónia Station.
On our most recent visit, to the new space in Amoreiras, which is more “manicured” and “lively“, we ended up tasting another wonderful delicacy and house specialty, the Miso Tonkotsu (€13.95), which warmed our souls from head to toe.
Address: Rua Caminhos de Ferro 136 (Santa Apolónia); Rua Professor Sousa da Câmara 138A (Amoreiras)
Tom Yum Goong soup at Mixed Martial Rice
Another delight I tried recently was the Tom Yum Goong Soup (€8.90), made with the traditional Thai prawn broth, where the sweetness and citrus – slightly spicy – make all the difference on these colder days.
I confess that I’ve become more of a fan of this house’s Pad Thai than the soup, but it’s definitely one of those broths that will make anyone boil with heat in just a few seconds.
Address: Rua Cecília Meireles (Mercado de S. Domingos de Benfica)
Shrimp Ravioli Soup at the Grand Palace Hong Kong
Some people call it Wonton soup, but at Grande Palácio Hong Kong, in Arroios, this variety is called “Shrimp Ravioli Soup”, where ravioli stuffed with this type of seafood play the main role.
The broth is also delicious and the highlight here is the Chinese cabbage. It’s the best way to start a meal in this authentic Cantonese restaurant.
Address: Rua Pascoal Melo 8A (Arroios)
Fish Soup at Frade dos Mares
Frade dos Mares, also in the Santos district, focuses on seafood specialties, so the fish soup was a must.
Rich, tasty, velvety, it’s the perfect soup for those who like to taste the sea and here you can do so in a cozy and very pleasant atmosphere.
For those who like to innovate, Mussel Soup is also available.
Address: Avenida Dom Carlos I 55A (Santos)
Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup at Pho-Pu
A typical Vietnamese dish, Pho can be described as a steaming rice noodle soup to which meat, spices, soy sprouts, lime or lemon, mint and basil, chili and seafood broth are added.
At Pho-Pu, in the Mouraria neighborhood, Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup is served boiling in a bowl and then topped off with the complements on a separate plate.
This soup is so hot and tasty that you leave here with a very warm stomach and soul.
Address: Rua do Benformoso 76 (Mouraria)
Dogfish soup at Zé Varunca
For years, Zé Varunca has been an Alentejo stronghold right in the middle of Bairro Alto and it’s a must to try the typical delicacies of the area.
The star of the soups is the Sopa de Cação (dogfish soup): Alentejo bread, coriander, olive oil, garlic and a very tasty piece of dogfish.
But if you think this is “just” soup, don’t be fooled! This is a well-composed main course served in a bowl.
Address: Travessa das Mercês 16 (Bairro Alto)
Canja de Lingueirão, at Taberna Albricoque
Located right next to Santa Apolónia Station, Taberna Albricoque is a restaurant that favors Mediterranean products with a special focus on Algarve specialties.
So it wasn’t surprising to see this Canja de Lingueirão on the menu , one of the most delicious and summery soups we’ve ever tasted.
Address: Rua Caminhos de Ferro 98 (Santa Apolónia)
Tomato Soup with Grouper, at O Magano
Some say that O Magano is the best Alentejo restaurant in Lisbon. We neither confirm nor deny this, but the truth is that the Tomato Soup with Grouper and Poached Egg is truly one of the best in the city.
The Alentejo is known for its soups that are main courses and this is a fine example, capable of satiating and ravishing any good fork.
Address: Rua Tomás da Anunciação 52A (Campo de Ourique)
Szechuan Beef Ramen, at Panda Cantina
Panda Cantina is a Cantonese restaurant that serves a spectacular ramen, very rich in flavor and prepared with the freshest ingredients, especially the coriander, which is always fresh, and the meat (pork or beef) used to make this wonderful meal.
Address: Rua da Prata 252 (Baixa); Rua de São Marçal 86 (Príncipe Real); Rua Joaquim António de Aguiar 73D (Marquês); Rua de Entrecampos 14A
Watch the video we made about who could best resist the spiciness of Panda Cantina’s delicious ramens.
Tantanmen Ramen, at Nood
We’re suspicious because we love this restaurant in Chiado, but the truth is that the ramen specialties made here are to die for.
And the location helps too. It’s very well decorated and comfortable, perfect for lunch or dinner with friends… with ramen to go with it, of course.
Address: Rua da Trindade 14 (Chiado); CC Campo Pequeno loja 605 (Campo Pequeno); and CC Vasco da Gama Loja 3009 Piso 3 (Parque das Nações)
Ramen at Ajitama Ramen Bistro
We end our list of restaurants serving the hottest soups in town with one of the last places we visited, Ajitama Ramen Bistro.
We tried, of course, the house specialty , Tonkotsu Hakata, the most demanding ramen to make.
The broth is based on pork and is simmered for at least 18 hours at controlled temperatures until it reaches the perfect density, creaminess and white color.
Address: Rua do Alecrim 47A (Chiado); Avenida Duque de Loulé 36 (Saldanha)
