There’s no doubt that a plan is underway to make the city more “designed” for people, both those who walk and those who choose the bicycle to get around, whether for work or pure sport. Welcome to bike lanes in Lisbon!
There is undoubtedly a strategic vision for mobility until 2030, with a detailed plan of how the city will transform itself over the next few years, always with a very clear objective: to give the city back to the people.
Making the city more sustainable
There’s no doubt that the bicycle is the most energy-efficient means of transportation there is and, in cities, it’s a great asset, as long as the ideal conditions exist for using it, not only in terms of reliability but, above all, in terms of safety.
Although Lisbon is known as the city of seven hills, the truth is that 73% of the streets are flat or have slopes of less than 5%, making the capital very accessible to most users of this means of locomotion.
Let’s not forget the ever-increasing range of electric bikes, which can help with the 27% of steepest climbs in the city.
That said, Lisbon is still a long way behind other European cities when it comes to daily bicycle use.
We are the biggest manufacturers, but the truth is that we are at the bottom of the list when it comes to usability.
In the hope that this statistic will be reversed in the near future, we suggest that you try out some of the best cycle paths in Lisbon.
We’re sure you’ll love it and maybe even start looking at this means of transportation with new eyes.
Cais do Sodré – Belém
With a distance of 7.4 kilometers, this two-way cycle path, which runs from Cais do Sodré to Belém, offers a constant view of the Tagus River. It’s one of our favorites, without a doubt.
Fábrica do Braço de Prata – Santa Apolónia Station
These two points in Lisbon are 4.2 kilometers apart, always along the waterfront and parallel to Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, with plenty of trees along the way and the Tagus river right next to it.
Restauradores – Campo Pequeno
Avenida da Liberdade alone is 1.3 kilometers long, to which is added the 900 meters of Avenida Fonte Pereira de Melo and then another 1.6 kilomet ers of Avenida da República, making up almost three kilometers of urban cycle paths where you can escape the traffic.
Parque das Nações – Belém Tower
This is the longest cycle route we’ve presented here, 16 kilometers long, almost always by the river and with spectacular views.
And remember that if you do it back and forth, you’re already counting more than 30 kilometers for your health, between Parque das Nações and Torre de Belém.
Benfica – Monsanto Panoramic Restaurant
Here we ask you to go up to beautiful Monsanto, more specifically to the Monsanto Panoramic, a building that has been refurbished and turned into a viewpoint.
Now, after a few good rides, enjoy the view over the city.
From time to time we also take the opportunity to ride along Lisbon’s cycle paths. This was one of the last and it was spectacular!
