With the New Year’s celebrations in Lisbon, one question arises: what works on January 1st? As it’s a national holiday and an important festive date, most of the big supermarkets (such as Pingo Doce, Lidl, Aldi, Auchan, Continente and others) won ‘t be opening their doors, as will many traditional stores and public services (such as the post office, banks and more).
However, public transport will continue to operate and there are various leisure and cultural options that will continue to operate, albeit with special timetables and/or adjusted to New Year’s Day in the capital. Shall we take a look at some tips?
Public transportation

- The Lisbon Metro resumes operations from 6:30 a.m. on January 1
- Carris will operate with reduced service, most notably until 12 noon (but we recommend checking the timetables in real time on the official website)
- CP – Comboios de Portugal will reinforce its operation on New Year’s Eve in Lisbon, but on January 1st the offer will be reduced due to it being a national holiday (you can check the suppressed trains here, as well as the timetables in real time).
Leisure spaces

- The Lisbon Oceanarium, the second largest in Europe, is open on January 1, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Wonderland, one of Europe’s best Christmas markets, is also open on January 1, from 4pm to 10pm.
- Lisbon Zoo welcomes visitors on January 1st from 10am to 6pm
Shopping centers
- According to the officialwebsite of the Amoreiras Shopping Center, the space is open from 12 noon on January 1, although the opening of stores is optional.
- Centro Vasco da Gama is closed on January 1st, as is Colombo
Editor’s note: ‘surprises’ can always happen, so before going to any of these establishments, we recommend that you check the local opening times and official media.
