It’s time to officially say goodbye to 2025 and embrace the New Year, but before that it’s important to pay particular attention to the public transport timetables in Lisbon on December 31 (Wednesday) and January 1 (Thursday). This is because, just like at Christmas, there are going to be adjustments to traffic.

Lisbon Metro

On the previous New Year’s Eve (2024-2025), the Lisbon Metro ran until 3am on January 1 on two of the four lines (Blue and Green). However, for 2025-2026 the scenario is different.
According to the official Metro de Lisboawebsite, on the night of December 31, trains will run until 1am on January 1, with a reinforced offer on the Blue line, with two trains, resuming service at 6.30am.
Carris
Alternatively, Carris will reinforce bus routes on New Year’s Eve.
According to a statement issued by the Lisbon City Council (CML), quoted by several media outlets, the early morning routes will operate at full capacity, but subject to traffic restrictions in downtown Lisbon.
The following routes are involved:
- 201 – Cais do Sodré-Linda-A-Velha
- 202 – Cais do Sodré-Bairro Padre Cruz
- 203 – Restelo-Xabregas
- 206 – Cais do Sodré-Odivelas
- 207 – Cais do Sodré-Fetais
- 208 – Cais do Sodré-Estação do Oriente
- 210 – Cais do Sodré-Prior Velho
Reinforcement of the CP – Comboios de Portugal offer

In order to make it easier to get to the capital without the inconvenience of traffic, CML also informs that CP – Comboios de Portugal will be increasing its offer on urban trains during New Year’s Eve, namely:
- Rossio – Sintra (1:20; 1h40; 2h; 2h20; 2h40; 3h; 4h; 5h)
- Cais do Sodré – Cascais (2h; 3h; 4h)
- Cascais – Cais do Sodré (2h)
Deactivation of shared services
If, instead of the metro and bus, you plan to take advantage of Lisbon ‘s light mobility , you should know that scooters and bicycles will be deactivated between 1 p.m. on December 31 and 6 a.m. on January 1.
Other relevant information
The epicenter of the New Year’s Eve festivities in Lisbon is Terreiro do Paço, so from 5pm on December 31 the Metro station in this area will be closed.
In addition, traffic closures are planned from 4pm on the same day in Terreiro do Paço, Baixa Pombalina, Rossio, Cais do Sodré and Campo das Cebolas.
