“And Your Flesh Becomes a Poem” is the name of Tamara Alves ‘ new exhibition at the Underdogs Gallery, which will unveil 27 new works by the Portuguese artist to all followers of her work.
Tamara Alvez’s first solo exhibition at Underdogs since 2020 starts on January 24 and runs until March 8. You can see the latest works by this Portuguese artist, using materials such as resin and wood, including watercolors, drawings, diptychs and sculptures.
Shaping the human experience
Known for works that somehow shape the human experience, this artist’s works always reveal a raw and poetic approach to the human condition, exploring themes such as primal instincts, love and wild forces.
However, in “And Your Flesh Becomes a Poem”, a title inspired by a poem by American writer Walt Whitman, Tamara Alves reflects on the duality of existence, silence and absence, highlighting the deconstruction of the female figure and the introduction of the word as a nuclear element.
Among the 27 works on show are drawings that are “born” from abstract stains, creating a contrast between artistic lack of control and emotional restraint.
The torn paper, almost as if it were skin, reflects a confrontation with mortality that celebrates life,” says the artist.
In addition to the exhibition at the gallery, a limited edition Underdogs will also be launched on January 22, and on the opening day you can admire the mural “The Wolf Awaits”, inspired by a phrase by filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami.
Painted by Tamara Alves at the back of the gallery in Marvila, this mural invites reflection on the human essence.
