Lisbon continues to rack up international distinctions, but this time the award does not go to a luxury hotel or a Michelin-starred restaurant: in the heart of Cais do Sodré, the Sunset Destination Hostel has just been crowned with a HOSCAR Award 2026, the prestigious Hostelworld awards which, in their 24th edition, analyzed millions of reviews from travelers around the world.
The “Community Hero”

The Lisbon hostel won in the “Community Superhero” category, part of the Responsible Tourism awards.
At a time when the debate about tourist pressure in Lisbon is the order of the day, Sunset Destination has taken the opposite path to isolation. The strategy that secured it the award is based on the premise that a tourist does not have to be just an observer, but can be an active agent in the city.
The jury and the public highlighted the hostel’s ability to build real bridges between visitors and residents. Over the last year, the numbers speak for themselves:
- More than 200 guests participated in direct actions in the city;
- More than 20 community events were organized, involving local artists and associations;
- Strategic partnerships with organizations such as Refood and Serve the City;

The “Community Hero” distinction is not just a symbolic title; this hostel has implemented weekly “Community Nights,” where the focus shifts from the usual tourist itinerary to cultural sharing with neighborhood residents.
In addition, volunteer clean-up initiatives and support for combating food waste have integrated travelers into Lisbon’s ecosystem of solidarity.
This victory at the 2026 HOSCARs puts Sunset Destination on the map as an example of how local accommodation can, and should, coexist in a sustainable and beneficial way for historic neighborhoods.
