Located just over 40 kilometers from Lisbon, Palmela Castle sits atop a hill rising about 250 meters above sea level. From its heights, on clear days, you can take in a breathtaking view capable of inspiring even the most troubled of poets. From Setúbal to the Sado Estuary, not to mention the dunes of Tróia and even the Lisbon coastline, the landscape is truly captivating.
What is its history?

Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it is a medieval fortress dating back over a thousand years, with origins tracing back to the period of Muslim occupation in the Iberian Peninsula. It is said that in 1147, upon learning of the conquests of Lisbon, Almada, and Sintra, the Moors decided to abandon Palmela Castle and take refuge in Alcácer do Sal. Consequently , Afonso Henriques took the fortress without spilling a drop of blood.
However, there was a new period of Muslim occupation, and its definitive recovery was not secured until 1194. Palmela Castle also housed the warrior monks of the Order of Santiago, who remained there for some time during the Middle Ages, but especially between 1443 and 1834 —the year in which the Decree of Extinction of Religious Orders brought about its demise.
