Portugal is a country with an ancient history, full of castles from north to south, some of which are very close to Lisbon. But this time we want to highlight not only the fortresses, but also some of the most beautiful medieval villages within a 2-hour drive of the capital.
From scenes of the Christian Reconquista to symbols of territorial defense, these medieval villages are living testimonies of other times. With picturesque, narrow streets, centuries-old churches and breathtaking views, this is an itinerary to start strolling this weekend.
Palmela
Located in the district of Setúbal, in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Palmela is one of the medieval towns to consider if you want to travel back in time. The Castle of Palmela, one of the most impressive in Portugal, is particularly noteworthy.
From the top of the hill of the Islamic fortress, conquered by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, you can see the region’s vineyards and the Serra da Arrábida. In addition to the castle, the churches covered in secular tiles, the picturesque viewpoints and the medieval layout of the center invite you to go for a walk.
In this context, it’s no surprise that Palmela is the setting for a spectacular annual Medieval Fair, which usually takes place in September, offering a real return to the past. As well as its history, this town is also famous for its wines.
