As well as having many secrets and stories to tell, Rua Augusta also has places that invite you to stop and visit.
There’s a lot to discover on “Rua da Augusta Figura do Rei” and these are our highlights.
Table Of Contents
London Salon
It was in 1918 that Londres Salão opened, at a time when Lisbon was being infected by the trends of the Anglo-Saxon and French-speaking world.
In the beginning, tailoring was the main business. In 1950, the Quadros family bought the space and it is still in their hands.
The Quadros family was responsible for focusing the business on selling fabrics with a huge range, from silks to sequins.
Address: Rua Augusta 277 and 279
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, from 10am to 7pm; Saturdays from 10am to 11pm
Casa Macário
Founded in 1913 at number 272, Casa Macário sells drinks, bonbons, coffees, teas and chocolates.
At the entrance, a sign says “Please Don’t Clean The Bottles” because, in this place, the bottles want to be covered in dust to prove their history.
It’s one of the best places to buy Port wine in Baixa, as well as regional products and goodies.
Just outside the store, if you look at the floor, you’re in for a surprise: the Portuguese sidewalk reads “Café, Chá e Chocolates | 274 – 272”, symbolizing the products sold there and the door numbers the store has had for 106 years.
Address: Rua Augusta 272 and 274
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 8pm; Sundays from 2pm to 8pm
Casa Canadá
Casa Canadá is another of Rua Augusta’s historic stores, founded in 1920.
It sells bags, wallets and other leather goods, from fashion to footwear, in a store that brings together some of the most reputable brands.
It is one of the places on Rua Augusta that combines tradition with modernity and has done so for 100 years! It definitely deserves a longer visit.
Address: Rua Augusta 232
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 7pm
Sapataria Lord
Right next to Manteigaria is Sapataria Lord which, when it opened in 1941, was dedicated only to the hat trade.
Then came shoes, ties and other accessories, and so the store’s variety continues to this day.
The décor is a mix of art deco and modernist inspiration and the space now belongs to the Godiva group.
It is probably one of the most charismatic stores on Rua Augusta.
Address: Rua Augusta 199 to 203
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 7pm
Manteigaria
Some say they’re some of the best custard tarts in Lisbon. We agree and have even included them on our list of the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon.
After the space in Mercado de Ribeira and Rua do Loreto, Manteigaria has opened its third store in Rua Augusta . The space occupies the former Camisaria Pitta, a historic store in the city that has since disappeared.
More recently, in January 2022, it opened a new store in Belém, at Rua de Belém 31.
Manteigaria has kept its original façade and the Portuguese sidewalk at the door, with the word “Pitta”, also takes us back to another time.
Address: Rua Augusta, 195 and 197
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 8am to midnight
Arco da Rua Augusta Viewpoint
Although it was inaugurated in 1875, the Rua Augusta Arch was planned in 1759 to commemorate the Pombaline reconstruction of the city after the 1755 earthquake.
Yes, it took more than a century to complete and was even compared to the works of Santa Engrácia by historians of the time!
In 2013, a belvedere opened at the top of the Arch, offering a panoramic view of the city and, in particular, Praça do Comércio and the Tagus.
Entrance is via Rua Augusta, through a small door right next to the Arch and tickets cost €3.
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
