This time, forget the romantic viewpoints, the smile-filled selfies and the rosy stories. What’s coming is much darker and scarier, but at the same time mysterious and intriguing. We’re talking about the “Crimes of Lisbon” night walk, which promises to take you to the city’s bloodiest places.
In a night walk lasting around 1.5 hours, actor Marco Pedrosa promises to tell you stories of psychopaths, murders and the most tragic events that have taken place in the city, revealing the darkest side of Lisbon’s history.
When are these mystery walks going to happen?
Forget nightclubs or late nights on one of Lisbon ‘s rooftops, because the night walks are coming that will make your nights more exciting… and creepy.
They take place every Friday and some Sunday evenings:
- June 29, Sunday, at 5 p.m;
- June 20, July 4, 11, 18 and 25, September 5, 12, 19 and 26, Fridays, at 21:30;
- October 5, Sunday, at 5 p.m.
The meeting point will always be the Rua Augusta Arch, in Praça do Comércio, where (nearby) the Regicide of King Carlos will be remembered.
From there, participants will head downtown and then pass by the Aljube Prison and the Lisbon Cathedral, where one of the city’s darkest episodes took place (in the 16th century). For now, we can tell you that it involves a bishop and the tower of this monument, but we’ll leave the darker details for the tour itself.
Continuing up to Alfama, you’ll discover a place shrouded in a haunting history (the organizers say it’s a secret) and, in the Castle area, there are stops at the Santa Luzia and Chão do Loureiro viewpoints.
The latter, overlooking the city center, was chosen to tell the story of the Távora Process, which ended with the public execution of this influential family at the time, at the behest of the Marquis of Pombal, not forgetting the terrible and great earthquake of 1755.
Descending through Mouraria, the walk then reaches Largo de São Domingos, the scene of a bloody massacre of Jews in 1506, and then Rossio (or Praça D. Pedro IV), next door, where thousands of people died on the bonfires of the Inquisition.
The route may change, but we think this is the perfect plan to do with family and friends between June and October.
