Izakayas are the Japanese equivalent of the typical Portuguese taverns we love so much . So, it came as no surprise that we devoured practically the entire menu at the well-known ramen restaurant , Ajitama, which recently launched a new summer menu that, among many dishes to share, stands out for its soft-shell crab tempura.
Inspired by the concept of Japanese taverns—hidden away in neighborhoods and alleyways, where local workers and food lovers often gather— this new Lisbon spot’s concept is based on sharing a variety of small plates at the table, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for socializing— especially at this time of summer, when we most enjoy getting together with family and friends.
15 delicacies to share

The menu was clearly designed for the warmer months and includes options such as Honey Ribs (€8.25), served with a glossy sauce; the classic Shrimp Tempura (€8.45) featuring the crispiest shrimp around; and the crunchy Nasu Chips (€3.95)— just to start.
The list of new items available to try as a group also includes the Belly Good Croquette (€2.25 each), which quickly earned a spot on our list of the best croquettes in Lisbon, and the Ocean Karaage (€9.45), which — due to its more refined flavor , thanks to fresh sea urchin roe— may not be to everyone’s taste.
In any case, it’s worth giving it a try—or you could always opt for the Karaage Classic (€7.95).

After all that, what truly won over our hearts (and our taste buds) were two out-of-the-box offerings: the Soft-Shell Crab Tempura (€11.25), whose combination of ingredients aims to directly evoke the flavors of the sea and the beach atmosphere—to be eaten from the shell right down to the legs; and the Smash Tuna Carpaccio (€11.95), which was our favorite dish—the kind you clean your plate of, leaving no trace of the fresh pressed tuna with honey-citrus sauce, fresh herbs, and a crunchy pistachio-onion-lime topping.
What a treat! It’s worth visiting Ajitama even if it’s just to try this dish. If you don’t believe us, watch our video review and see for yourself how happy we were!
