We love all the museums in Lisbon and, if we could, our lives would be spent within the four walls of one of these spaces, any of them, especially if they were on our list of preferences.
We love these places of knowledge, which tell us stories and take us on a journey, most of the time to the past.
Since it’s not easy to say which museum in Lisbon we like best, we’ve put together a short list of those where we feel better every time we visit them.
Table Of Contents
Marine Museum
I can’t tell you what you can do and discover at the Marine Museum in Belém! Here you can learn all about the history of the Portuguese Navy through spaces dedicated to its various areas of activity, such as the Planetarium or the Galley Pavilion.
Fado Museum
The person writing these lines loves music, even though he can only strum half a dozen chords on the guitar. On an ordinary box guitar, it must be said, nothing like the mastery of sound and melody that comes out of a Portuguese guitar.
Maybe that’s why we like to come here so often. Going to the Fado Museum and listening to some of the most beautiful songs is undoubtedly one of our pleasures and we don’t make a point of hiding it.
Tile Museum
If you usually walk around Lisbon, you’ve probably noticed the many tile murals dotted around the city.
If you’ve never seen these open-air works of art, follow our guide to the most beautiful tiles in Lisbon.
One of the museums in Lisbon where you can appreciate this type of handicraft is at the National Tile Museum itself, one of the most visited museums in the country, but unfortunately more by foreigners than by Portuguese.
Pharmacy Museum
Let’s be honest: we really like the Pharmacy Museum, but the truth is that we love going there to be in the Pharmacia Felicidade, which has a garden facing the Tagus .
Orient Museum
We’re passionate about oriental culture and at the Museu do Oriente you’ll find everything related to this side of the globe, from the oldest pieces and artefacts to the history of civilizations in that part of the planet.
It’s also here that you’ll find various collections of Portuguese and Asian art, demonstrating what the Portuguese once left behind.
Money Museum
We’re not materialists by any means, but that’s not what this museum in Lisbon is all about .
The Money Museum introduces you to the importance of money in society, while you have fun minting your own face on one of the sides of the coin. That’s the promise of half a day well spent.
Museum of Natural History and Science + Lisbon Botanical Garden
This is not only one of our favorite museums in Lisbon, it ‘s also one of our favorite places. And all because we love going to the museum and passing by the Lisbon Botanical Garden.
And, if you have children, it’s perfect for anyone who loves science, exploring the evolution of species while learning more about animals and plants.
Dinosaurs? You’re in the right place! Here you’ll find lots of information about these prehistoric giants.
Calouste Gulbenkian Museum
At the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum you can visit two collections: the Founder’s Collection and the Modern Collection.
In the former you’ll find objects from Ancient Egypt, the Islamic East or works by artists such as Rembrandt, Turner, Monet, Rodin or René Lalique. In the second, you’ll learn more about Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Almada Negreiros, Paula Rego or Vieira da Silva, in one of the most complete collections of modern and contemporary Portuguese art, from the end of the 19th century to the present day.
Puppet Museum
Get ready to enter a world full of puppets and marionettes, in a museum that will delight not only the little ones but also the grown-ups who appreciate this more folkloric and traditional type of handicraft.
Here you’ll find collections of masks and puppets from all over the world, from Asia to Mexico, Brazil and Europe.
National Coach Museum
We’re all a bit fascinated by cars or the fantastic world of carriages, which remind us of Cinderella.
And that’s why one of the museums in Lisbon, the National Coach Museum, is where you’ll enjoy learning a little more about our history and this means of transportation.
MAAT
The MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, of course! Just being outside, by the entrance or at the famous viewpoint, is already a spectacle.
It’s also in Belém, one of our favorite places to walk around and see the Tagus.
