The Emergency Meeting Points in Lisbon are places identified by the Municipal Civil Protection where you can take shelter in the event of disasters or serious emergencies, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods or fires.
These sites are part of a more general plan to prepare and respond to natural disasters in the city, coordinated by Civil Protection and the capital’s Parish Councils.
A total of 86 Emergency Meeting Points have already been signposted in Lisbon, spread across all of Lisbon’s parishes and capable of sheltering more than 600,000 people.
Where are these Emergency Meeting Points?
With the aim of ensuring the safety of Lisbon’s population, these places allow many people to gather on a temporary basis, whenever staying at home or in other buildings is identified as more dangerous.
In this way, by bringing together a greater number of people at strategic points, it makes it easier for the authorities to coordinate rescue operations.
These safe points are located all over the city, particularly near residential and commercial areas, where there are usually more residents.
The 86 Emergency Meeting Points were selected on the basis of risk analyses and have the infrastructure to withstand large concentrations of people.
You can find all the Emergency Meeting Points defined on this map, and on the Lisbon City Council website you will have access to each of these locations, from which you can define directions via GPS.
What should you do in an emergency?
First of all, take the opportunity to register for the SMS alert system, so you always know what kind of unusual occurrences are happening in Lisbon, such as adverse weather conditions or even how you should proceed in the event of technological anomalies , as has happened in the recent past.
Then download and keep this Emergency Kit, recommended by the civil authorities, ensuring that you follow the first steps to stay safe in the event of a major disaster in the city.
But only in the event of an emergency should you go to one of the points closest to your home or workplace.
