This incredible feat is the work of Portuguese architect Gonçalo Pires Marques, who has thus become a finalist for the prestigious “Building of the Year 2025” award, promoted by ArchDaily, which is just one of the most important international distinctions in the field of architecture.
The project in question is Casa Donavan, which stands out for its innovative approach to sustainability through the use of wood, without deviating from what can also be the excellence of contemporary architecture.
Casa Donavan
Located near the extensive rice paddies of Comporta, Casa Donavan is an almost handmade project, the result of close collaboration between the architect and the carpenter.
Thermo-treated wood with zero chemicals was used in its construction, reflecting the importance of being a sustainable home, where the quality of the materials was not left to chance.
Inside, you can see the care taken in the design, designed to minimize the environmental impact, through a well-studied sun exposure and used here to avoid waste, both of heat and cold, reducing dependence on artificial equipment such as heaters or air conditioners.
For architect Gonçalo Pires Marques,
Portuguese architecture is a field recognized among peers worldwide like few other areas. Like Portuguese cinema, it is regularly mentioned and even awarded. In fact, Portugal is the only country in the world with two Pritzker Prize winners still alive, which reflects the quality and influence of our work.”
