Train traffic has been re-established along the entire length of the Oeste Line, following the reopening, on Sunday, March 2, of the section between Mira Sintra-Meleças (Sintra) and Malveira (Mafra) stations, located in the Lisbon district.
According to information published in the Público newspaper, rail traffic on the West Line had been interrupted in April 2024, for a period initially planned of four months.
According to the same source, “unidentified problems in the Sapataria tunnel (Sobral de Monte Agraço municipality) led to the interruption being extended until January” 2025. By then, only the section between Torres Vedras and Malveira has reopened.
Interventions on this section of the West Line
An article in the magazine Executive Digest, which quotes a statement from Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), specifies the work carried out.
According to the source, various pieces of equipment in the electronic signaling systems had been the target of theft and vandalism, a situation that had jeopardized the deadlines set for restoring rail traffic.
As such, “the intervention covered the electronic signaling system at Mira Sintra-Meleças station, with the replacement of signaling and power supply cables, reconstruction of stolen and damaged technical cabinets, construction and rehabilitation of illuminated signals,” reads Executive Digest.
