Jornal Económico has just published a story reporting that the Portuguese government is going ahead with an immersed road tunnel between Trafaria and Algés, as part of the infrastructure investment package.
According to the online daily,
In the coming weeks, the government will announce a road project for the country and a new strategic port plan for Portugal. The announcement was made this week by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, at the conference ‘Portugal 2030: Strategic Future for the Construction Sector’, organized by the Association of Civil Construction and Public Works Industrialists (AICCOPN).”
The construction of one of these infrastructures has long been a desire of the mayors of the south bank, and now it may even be announced by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who will take the opportunity to unveil plans for the third crossing over the Tagus, which will link Alcochete to Lisbon, as well as other strategic initiatives for the country.
If it goes ahead, the road tunnel will considerably improve connections between the two banks of the Tagus, relieving car traffic in both directions, as well as moderating traffic on the existing bridges, 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama.
