The intervention in Praça de Alvalade, which will also transform part of the central divider on Avenida de Roma, is designed to bring more vitality, green spaces and greater sustainability to the neighborhood, but the truth is that it could take around six months.
The work should even have started during the summer, in a project that will have begun in 2022, involving the Alvalade Parish Council and Lisbon City Council, whose aim is to give the square and the surrounding streets a more human and functional dimension, while respecting their historic nature, especially the Monument to Santo António.

Renovate, but keep the identity
The Alvalade neighborhood is currently one of the most active and interesting in the capital, with a lot happening there, especially the opening of more and more businesses.
This redevelopment therefore aims to increase the number of leisure spaces for all its residents, as well as its visitors, making every trip to this Lisbon neighborhood even more enjoyable.
As such, the works will focus on four major axes of urban transformation:
- Creating more expressive green spaces that improve the environmental and aesthetic quality of the area;
- Reducing the heat island effect by replacing excessively paved areas with green beds;
- Increased road safety, through measures that encourage the use of crosswalks and discourage informal crossings;
- Adding value to local life by offering a more comfortable space for pedestrian circulation and community gatherings.
New setting for the Santo António Monument
Alvalade Square is home to one of the district’s most distinctive monuments. A raised green bed is to be created to enrich the base of the Monument to Saint Anthony, with shrubs that will add more color to the space, which is currently more grey and monotonous.
Another novelty is the installation of large pots distributed over the sidewalk, in which trees will be planted, which in the future will be able to offer shade and freshness.
Between Avenida do Brasil and Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América, the central divider on Avenida de Roma should also have more greenery, and the intervention will also include the installation of raised beds with shrubs.
The trees already in place are to be maintained, guaranteeing the continuity of the landscape to which everyone is already accustomed.
