Casa do Parlamento is one of Lisbon’s most recent cultural – and democratic – spaces, defining itself as an Interpretive Center for the Assembly of the Republic itself.
Open to everyone free of charge, it is an interactive site that opened to the public on April 25 (2025), standing out as a new permanent cultural facility that aims to “bring closer” citizens to political and parliamentary life in Portugal.
Where it is and what to see
Casa do Parlamento is located on the famous Rua de São Bento, just opposite the Portuguese Parliament.
It has four floors full of thematic content ranging from Citizenship, Parliament, Democracy and Memory, using multimedia material and interactive experiences to present all these themes in a more fun and light-hearted way to all citizens.
The House of Parliament was designed to provide practical experiences that recreate the workings of the Assembly of the Republic. Among the activities available, you can:
- Simulate Parliament’s legislative and supervisory activities;
- Explore the composition of the Assembly from the First Legislature to the present day;
- Climb onto a replica of the pulpit in the Chamber of Sessions and record a speech;
- Follow a timeline with the key moments of the parliamentary regime in Portugal;
- Watch reenactments of historical debates recreated by actors on multimedia panels.
All these interactions will help you better understand how the decisions that shape our country are made.
Culture, music and temporary exhibitions
At Casa do Parlamento you’ll also find a Jukebox with intervention music, with works by artists such as Zeca Afonso, Capicua, José Mário Branco and Deolinda, linking musical art to the memories of the democratic struggles the country has gone through.
Also noteworthy is the gallery for temporary exhibitions, which regularly fill these walls with new content, particularly with themes linked to citizenship and democracy.
