The decision to call Campo das Cebolas Largo José Saramago didn’t please everyone, but a large part of the area has changed its name.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize to José Saramago, Lisbon City Council decided to name the square around Casa dos Bicos after the writer.
As a result, a large part of Campo das Cebolas is now called Largo José Saramago.
To give you an idea, this is the area between Rua dos Bacalhoeiros and Rua Infante Dom Henrique, which is also crossed by Rua da Alfândega.
The rest of the area will remain as it always was and the respective sign will also remain there.
The proposal, launched by the previous Councillor for Culture, Catarina Vaz Pinto, was approved by the executive and was also approved by the Municipal Toponymy Commission.
Even so, there were those who didn’t agree with the decision, such as the PSD and CDS-PP who, in opposition, voted against it.
