The Lovely Castelo restaurant and rooftop is located in the heart of the iconic São Jorge Castle, inside the walls, proving to be a true refuge combining history, stunning views and a very tasty culinary experience.
Tucked away at the top of the city’s highest hill, this restaurant offers a breathtaking panoramic view over Lisbon and the Tagus River, allowing you to enjoy a magical setting that turns any meal into an unforgettable moment, especially at sunset, when the golden light highlights the beauty of the city.
Gastronomy and history, together at the top
With its cozy and sophisticated atmosphere, the Lovely Castelo restaurant and rooftop is ideal if you’re looking for a place to connect with Portugal’s rich history. It also stands out for being considered Lisbon’s first rooftop terrace, dating back to 1147, providing an open-air experience that blends perfectly with the castle’s historic charm.
Whether for a casual meal, a special event or simply to relax on its charming terrace with snacks and refreshing drinks, this is a place not to be missed.
Our experience at Lovely Castelo
If you want to enter the Castelo de São Jorge without waiting in the long queues at the door, the best tip is to book a table at least 48 hours in advance.
When we arrived at the Lovely Castelo, we found ourselves in a giant interior room, which previously housed the old Sala dos Leões.
But we chose a table outside, on the oldest rooftop in the city, and perhaps the world (we’re waiting to be told otherwise).
We started our meal with two irresistible starters: Croquettes accompanied by Mustard Mayonnaise (7€), which are surprising for their balance between crunchiness and intense flavor; and Oysters Gratinadas (4€/unit), which combine the delicacy of seafood with a creamy, slightly toasted texture.
As main courses, we opted for two house specialties: the Lombo de Bacalhau à Lagareiro (18€), which turned out to be a perfect choice, with succulent cod accompanied by roasted potatoes drizzled with top quality olive oil and garlic; and the Secretos de Porco Ibérico (20€), very tender and with rich flavors.
To end this sublime gastronomic experience, we chose two classic desserts: a creamy and intense Chocolate Mousse (5€) and a delicate Crème Brulée (4.5€), whose crunchy layer of caramelized sugar contrasted wonderfully with the smooth cream.
To accompany the whole meal, we toasted with a refreshing Sparkling Wine Sangria with Red Fruits (€30), which brought lightness and freshness to the moment.
At Lovely Castelo, every detail, from the historic location to the carefully prepared flavors, contributes to creating a truly unforgettable experience.
