This news story, about the Baixa-Chiado metro station escalators working at 100%, has only been up to date for a few days, as it is common for these escalators to be consistently out of order.
But it looks like good news is coming: the government has just authorized Metro de Lisboa to spend seven million euros on the maintenance of escalators and elevators, mainly in the Baixa-Chiado and Airport stations, until 2030.
The authorization for this funding comes after criticism from users due to the “forced stoppages” of this equipment.
It’s true that the Lisbon Metro has invested heavily in improving accessibility and modernization, most notably the new escalators installed at Baixa-Chiado station, but the truth is that they often continue to have problems.
The money made available by the government will be used for the complete maintenance of 22 escalators and six elevators at both of the aforementioned stations, while Metro de Lisboa itself will invest almost 14 million euros in modernizing and replacing mechanical equipment at several other stations, including Campo Pequeno, Picoas, Martim Moniz and Intendente.
