Schist houses with smoke coming out of the chimneys, set in villages surrounded by centuries-old forests, on the terraces of mountains sculpted by nature, seem increasingly difficult to imagine. At a time when the hustle and bustle of city life and the intensity of digital media dominate, destinations such as Aldeia Natal de Cabeça take us back in time.
Located around 300 kilometers from Lisbon, this small village with around 100 inhabitants is a real unspoiled treasure, set in the municipality of Seia, in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. Here, the memories of the Christmas Eve evenings spent at the grandparents’ house are not just faded images, but the reality that still remains today in a genuine way.
Far from the inflatables and the hustle and bustle of city carousels, in Cabeça, Christmas begins to be prepared months in advance by the local community. And all the decorations are made with the hands of those who want to keep the essence of the village alive. Pine branches, dried leaves, vines, corn cobs and other elements collected from nature and from clearing the forest serve as tools for the Christmas decorations.
Between narrow alleyways, decorations in the shape of bells and stars give this authentic Christmas postcard an even more picturesque look. The Christmas Village of Cabeça has resisted the rural exodus and the harshness of the passage of time like few others. This year, the preservation of the local community and the continuation of traditions such as the Mass of the Rooster have attracted many visitors.
‘Lost’ in the Serra da Estrela, Cabeça has also attracted the attention of international media such as “The Guardian”, where it stands out precisely for the frankness and humility of its people. At dusk, the Christmas Village gains even more charm with LED lights – a commitment to sustainability – illuminating the typical schist houses.
You can also find a number of stalls with local products, such as cheeses, sausages, honey and jams, which turn the typical houses into mini Christmas markets. At the same time, the Aldeia Natal program promotes workshops, walks and bike rides, as well as the Christmas bonfire in the village, starting at 6.30pm on December 24th.
Until January 1, 2026, Cabeça’s Christmas Village will continue to shine and enchant kids and adults alike, always with the same commitment: to keep the tradition of yesteryear alive. An adventure that began 13 years ago and now stands out among Christmas destinations. All this thanks to the tenacity of the local people.
