If you think stories of serial killers and unsolved dark crimes are found only in the U.S., think again. Between 1992 and 1993, three women were found dead in Lisbon, and to this day, the perpetrator of these murders remains unknown, fueling the “myth” and The Hunt for the Lisbon Ripper.
From October 28 through December 26, a space at the premises of the Hindu Community of Portugal in Lumiar will become the stage for a new immersive theater production, produced by Kilt and Observador. Reality and fiction blend together in a setting spanning over 1,500 m², spread across various scenic environments, to host interactive sessions dedicated to true crime.

Valentina, Fernanda, and Maria João are the names of the victims of the infamous Lisbon Ripper. All three were sex workers, and the repetition of a particularly violent modus operandi—involving abdominal mutilations and the removal of organs—led investigators to establish a connection between the crimes and conclude that they were the “work” of a serial killer.
The horrific murders were investigated by the PJ, and even the FBI was called in to assist with analyzing the case and profiling the criminal, though none of the more than ten suspects was ever charged. Due to their murky circumstances—worthy of a Hollywood horror movie—the crimes inspired the well-known podcast *Hunt for the Lisbon Ripper*, produced by the newspaper *Observador* and listened to more than a million times.
A show where staying in the audience is not an option

The crime, the figures involved in the case, and the detailed journalistic investigation inspired the narrative of the show *The Hunt for the Lisbon Ripper*. However, the story doesn’t end there. The script for this immersive theater production also includes references to the victims, as well as key insights from investigators. A blend of fiction and reality.
It is against this dark backdrop that the audience is invited to become part of the story—not from the comfort of seats in the auditorium, but as a wanderer on a journey through Lisbon’s underworld of the 1990s. With Inês Castel-Branco’s voice-over guiding the experience, you can move about freely and interact at specific moments with the cast of ten actors, who portray more than 20 characters, for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Here, a single truth is not enough; the production aims to be much more than a simple reconstruction of the heinous crimes committed. After all, there are always multiple layers to a story; it’s important to examine each one through clues, accounts, and unlikely suspects, but also through the victims’ stories. An immersive, interactive experience that’s sure to give you goosebumps right in the middle of the Lisbon Ripper Hunt.
