Opened nearly 40 years ago, the Amoreiras Shopping Center introduced escalators, fast food, and an architectural style that divided the country.
Long before the Colombo or Vasco da Gama shopping centers, it was here that the habit of “strolling through the mall” was born.
The mall that changed the daily lives of Lisbon residents

Anyone walking through the streets of the Portuguese capital today, accustomed to the convenience of having dozens of large shopping centers just a few minutes away, can hardly imagine the impact of September 27, 1985.
It was on this date that the Amoreiras Shopping Center opened its doors to the public, becoming Lisbon’s first large-scale shopping center and forever changing the daily lives of the Portuguese.
In the 1980s, street shopping dominated downtown Lisbon and the city’s neighborhoods. The idea of bringing together hundreds of stores, movie theaters, and restaurants in a single enclosed, air-conditioned space was an absolute novelty.
Going to Amoreiras wasn’t just about shopping—it was a true social event. For many families, it was there that they rode an escalator for the first time, tried new fast-food concepts, and had their first encounter with prestigious international brands.
The impact, however, was not limited to consumer spending. The shopping complex designed by architect Tomás Taveira sparked heated debates in society at the time. Its mirrored towers, inspired by medieval warriors’ helmets, and the use of bold colors and daring geometric shapes brought postmodernist aesthetics to the city’s hilltops.
Some applauded the breath of fresh air and the modernity; others harshly criticized the break from traditional architecture. No one remained indifferent!
How Amoreiras Has Managed to “Age Gracefully” Over the Years

Nearly four decades later, and in the face of the proliferation of colossal shopping centers throughout Greater Lisbon, Amoreiras could have become obsolete. Instead, it has managed to “age gracefully.”
It cemented its status by adopting a premium positioning, maintaining a loyal clientele that values its central location and a more understated atmosphere.
Other attractions followed, such as the opening of the Amoreiras 360º Panoramic View observation deck at the top of one of the towers, which demonstrated the space’s capacity for reinvention, attracting a new wave of visitors and photographers in search of one of the most unobstructed views of the Tagus River and the city; as well as Amoreiras’ now-iconic Christmas tree and nativity scene.

More than just a cluster of storefronts, Lisbon’s first large shopping center is a landmark of contemporary urban history.
It is a landmark that has stood the test of time and reminds us of the exact moment when the capital decided to take the leap into the modern era of consumerism.
