For lovers of history and “hidden” places, the Roman Galleries of Rua da Prata will reopen in September with four days of unmissable guided tours.
Lisbon, a city full of “secrets”
Lisbon still holds underground secrets like this one, a real treasure, located in Rua da Prata, which occasionally opens its catacombs for a lightning visit… with tickets selling out very quickly .
So if you’ve never managed to visit, or just want to repeat the experience, you should know that guided tours are available from September 18 to 21.
This reopening is part of the European Heritage Days and aims, once again, to show everyone who can get in one of the city’s most enigmatic monuments.
The underground tours will be guided by the Museum of Lisbon’s team of experts, and will take place at:
- September 18 and 19, between 14:30 and 18:30;
- September 20 and 21, between 09:30 and 18:30.
On September 20 and 21, the underground visits at 3.30pm will be followed by a tour that reveals some of the main sites where the Roman heritage is still visible today.
On September 20, the route goes from the Galleries to the Casa dos Bicos, and on September 21, from the Galleries to the Roman Theatre.
The main curiosities of these galleries
Discovered in the 18th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, Lisbon’s Roman Galleries served as the Rua da Prata Water Conservancy.
This cryptoporticus, which was designed to support the buildings above ground, is one of the many examples of archaeological remains you’ll find in downtown Lisbon.
Since there is a clear proximity to the River Tagus, which would have been the main means of connecting the country’s trade networks, there are several clues in this part of the city to what would have been infrastructures for the production and preparation of fish, as well as a rubbish dump and even warehouses.
Built over two thousand years ago, this monument is not always available for visits, as its usual water level is almost a meter high, and every year (at least twice, in April and September) all the water has to be drained for this special event.
