For those who love history and “hidden” places, the Roman Galleries of Rua da Prata will not reopen in April this year.
The reason makes perfect sense: to offer hundreds of visitors better visiting conditions.
Lisbon, a city full of “secrets”
Lisbon still holds underground secrets like this one, a real treasure located on Rua da Prata, which occasionally opens its catacombs for a quick visit… with tickets selling out very quickly.
So, if you’ve never managed to visit or just want to repeat the experience, be aware that in 2026, you won’t be able to visit them in April, as is usually the case.
The main curiosities of these galleries
Discovered in the 18th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the Roman Galleries of Lisbon served as water reservoirs for Rua da Prata.
This cryptoporticus, which was designed to support the buildings above the surface, is one of many examples of archaeological remains that you can find in downtown Lisbon.
Given its proximity to the Tagus River, which was the main link to the country’s trade networks, there are several clues in this area of the city to what would have been infrastructure for the production and preparation of fish, as well as a rubbish dump and even warehouses.
Built over two thousand years ago, this monument is not always open to visitors, as its usual water level is almost one meter high, and every year (at least twice, in April and September) it is necessary to drain all the water for this special event.
The “precious” tickets
We know how difficult it is to get one of these tickets to visit the Roman Galleries of Lisbon, as they are not yet on sale.
