If you remember, this isn’t the first time that a group of fin whales has “chosen” the Lisbon coast for their “walks”. was the last time they appeared on July 23, 2023.
This time, the sighting took place between May 24 and 25, and a total of six fin whales were found, an occurrence that has been happening more and more since 2019, confirms biologist Sidónio Paes, from the company Sea EO Tours, to the newspaper Público.
According to him, who had already reported a similar sighting last year, although with fewer elements, one of the fin whales was in the company of a calf.
Fin whales in Lisbon: the reasons
In Sidónio Paes’ opinion, the fact that the Lisbon canyon is rapidly going from 50 to 200 or even 300 meters deep, as well as the increase in water temperature, makes these animals look for food on the surface, especially krill and sardines.
Fin whales are the second largest animal living on planet Earth, after the blue whale, measuring between 18 and 27 meters in length.
It usually has a grayish color and is known for its speed, which can even reach 40km/h.
In this video, taken last year, you can see just how large this animal is.
