Lisbon has a new “lung” covering more than 17 hectares: Carnide Green Park has opened its doors to the public and is now, in addition to being a new leisure spot for everyone, a strategic project for the urban renaturalization of the city of Lisbon.
After several years of neglect, which reduced its ecological and landscape value, this land in Carnide underwent a thorough environmental redevelopment, turning it into the capital’s newest green park.
From abandoned land to urban leisure center
The main objective of this project is clear: to turn what was a problem into a solution, transforming what was once a forgotten space into an ecosystem focused on “nature-based solutions,” through an intervention that goes far beyond the aesthetics of this place.
In addition to leisure facilities for the general public, the new ecological structures of Carnide Green Park are designed to reduce the risk of flooding in the Lisbon area, which is one of the city’s serious problems. At the same time, the biodiversity of this area is also enhanced.
New natural “shield”
The scale of intervention in this abandoned park was remarkable, with the construction of a natural “shield” against the adverse weather conditions that are now approaching.
Thus, to restore the ecological value of this site , the following were planted:
- 5,900 trees;
- 70,000 shrubs.
In total, there are around 70 native species (originating from the region) that now “fill” the landscape of this park, with this choice taking into account the best adaptation to the climate, the least need for maintenance, and, of course, more effective support for local fauna.
Carnide Green Park also uses non-potable spring water for its maintenance, as well as an irrigation system that reuses water.
The footpaths are highly permeable, built with materials that allow water to infiltrate the soil, helping to combat the soil impermeability typical of cities and assisting in flood prevention.
The park’s lighting uses LED technology , ensuring very low energy consumption.
