Lisbon has a new “lung” of more than 17 hectares: the Parque Verde de Carnide has already opened its doors to the public and is now, in addition to a new place of leisure for everyone, a strategic urban renewal project for the city of Lisbon.
After several years of neglect, which took away some of its ecological and landscape value, this plot of land in Carnide has undergone a thorough environmental upgrade, making it the capital’s newest green park.
From abandoned land to urban leisure center
The main objective of this project is clear: to turn what was a problem into a solution, transforming what was once a forgotten space into an ecosystem focused on “nature-based solutions”, through an intervention that goes far beyond the very aesthetics of this place.
In addition to providing leisure facilities for the general public, the Carnide Green Park’s new ecological structures are designed to reduce the risk of flooding in the Lisbon area, which is one of the city’s serious problems. At the same time, the biodiversity of this area is also reinforced.
New natural “shield
The scale of intervention in this abandoned park has been remarkable, with a natural “shield” having been built against the weather adversities that are now approaching.
In order to restore the ecological value of this site, trees have been planted:
- 5,900 trees;
- 70,000 shrubs.
In total, there are around 70 native species (originating in the region) that now “fill” the landscape of this park, and this choice took into account better adaptation to the climate, less need for maintenance and, of course, more effective support for the local fauna.
The Carnide Green Park also uses water from a non-potable source for its maintenance, as well as an irrigation system that reuses water.
As for the footpaths, they are highly permeable, built with materials that allow water to seep into the ground, helping to combat the sealing of the soil typical of cities and helping to prevent flooding.
The lighting in the park uses LED technology, ensuring very low energy consumption.
