CrossFit is a type of high-intensity training that combines various types of exercises, from different sports such as weightlifting, athletics, gymnastics and functional training.
With the aim of working out various parts of the body as well as the mental part, among the various types of dynamic training that CrossFit can enhance, we highlight the exercises of strength, endurance (where the more mental part of this modality prevails), power, coordination, flexibility and balance.
You know the slang: burpees, squats, pull-ups, box jump, etc.
CrossFit was created in the early 2000s by Greg Glassman and has been gaining more and more adherents in our country, especially in the big cities, which have opened various boxes to practice this sport.
These “boxes” are usually large open spaces where you’ll find various pieces of equipment for practicing this type of intensive training, usually called WODs (Workout of the Day).
These WODs can include burpees, squats, throwing and weightlifting, box jumps, running, among others, in an activity that can already be considered a group sports activity, even though anyone can do it alone.
Practicing in a group, however, helps to create a sense of community and mutual help among all the practitioners.
The benefits of the sport
Improving general physical fitness will be the main benefit of regular CrossFit practice, as well as increased muscular strength and endurance, weight loss, stress reduction and improved cardiorespiratory capacity.
With regard to the more social aspect of this sport, CrossFit, when practiced in a group, helps to strengthen and increase our motivational state, thus improving our mental health in a dynamic and challenging way.
CrossFit can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, gender or even physical condition, and should be adapted by level of demand to the individual capabilities of each practitioner.
The workouts, as they are scalable, must be accompanied by a qualified coach, who must adapt each workout to the needs and goals of each athlete, while minimizing the risk of injury.
