There are destinations that call for total disconnection, to slow down the frenetic pace of everyday life and feel more in touch with nature. If you are looking for places to relax and slow down a little, there are three Portuguese locations to consider for a weekend getaway: Loriga, Mértola, and Vila Nogueira de Azeitão. The best part? The latter is only about a 30-minute drive from Lisbon.
These three villages were recently awarded the “Best Tourism Village 2025” label, as part of the “Best Tourism Villages” program, awarded by the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN).
This is a three-year seal that recognizes rural destinations that demonstrate excellence in sustainable, cultural, and community tourism. In addition to Loriga, Mértola, and Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, UN Tourism also chose the village of Quintandona (in the district of Porto) to join the Upgrade Program.
Tourism as a boost for rural areas

Tourism can be a powerful tool for promoting community prosperity , inclusive growth, and territorial cohesion in rural areas. Our ‘Best Tourism Villages 2025’ initiative emphasizes the efforts of communities to protect their local heritage, preserve their natural resources, and create economic opportunities through tourism,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili at the awards ceremony at the end of 2025.
What does the label consist of?
Promoted by UN Tourism, there are some important aspects to consider about the “Best Tourism Villages” label, such as:
- The distinction is valid for three years
- Each locality receives a diploma and/or signed plaque, which can be used in its institutional communications
- During the period of validity of the label, biennial reports on local activities, among other things, may be requested.
Other Portuguese locations in the ‘elite club’
Around two hundred destinations worldwide are part of the “Best Tourism Villages” network, including several Portuguese locations that have been distinguished in previous editions, such as Castelo Rodrigo, Óbidos, Castelo Novo, Sortelha, and Ericeira, among others.
Are you already familiar with any of these locations, or will you take advantage of this new recognition to visit them for the first time?
