Looking at the sky and observing special astronomical phenomena is becoming more and more a leisure and contemplation activity , a simple and pure appreciation of the beauty that surrounds us. Whether it’s to record the moment for posterity in incredible photographs or to look for inspiration, the Harvest Supermoon is just around the corner.
In the early hours of October 7 (Tuesday), the skies over Lisbon and Portugal promise a unique spectacle. This will be the first Supermoon since November 2024, which makes this event even more desirable. The lunar satellite will appear larger and brighter than usual, reaching its peak at 4:48 a.m. on October 7.

The Harvest Moon
Traditionally, the Harvest Moon occurs closer to the fall equinox. This year, however, it will be the latest since 1987. The origin of the name is due to the fact that it coincides with the peak of agricultural activities.
There are many legends and ancient traditions associated with this time of year. For example, the Native Americans called it Corn Moon, a time when corn is harvested.
To thank the gods and appeal for future abundance, various peoples celebrated specific rituals. In Asia, the Moon Festival is held in honor of the autumn full moon.

The next Supermoons
If you want to take advantage, you can already put the next Supermoons in 2025 in your diary :
- November 5
- December 5th
For the best viewing, particularly on the Harvest Moon, we recommend that all Lisbon residents (and others) choose viewing spots away from light pollution.
