The people, in general, didn’t know what was about to happen, but the military and other parties were preparing a revolution to establish democracy and put an end to the dictatorship and oppression in which Portugal lived. And the songs of April played a key role in the outcome that we all know.
They were waiting for the signal that it was time to launch the long-awaited military coup. And it came through the radio.
Music and culture played a crucial role in the revolution that changed the country. “E depois do adeus”, a song by Paulo de Carvalho, was the long-awaited signal that sounded.
But it wasn’t just this song that became a symbol of April. Many others are associated with this very special revolution, which took place with carnations instead of guns, and convey a sense of freedom that is loved and appreciated by the Portuguese people.
We’ve made a selection of some April songs so that we can celebrate this day together, which is so special to us.
Grândola, Vila Morena, by Zeca Afonso
Liberdade, by Sérgio Godinho
Bullfighting, by Fernando Tordo
IMF, by José Mário Branco
Hymn of the Confederation, by G.A.C. Cultural Action Group
Other countries were also inspired by our April 25 and created songs with that theme, such as “Tanto Mar”, by Chico Buarque.
