There are monuments that need no introduction due to their grandeur and significance; one such example is São Jorge Castle. Perched atop one of Lisbon’s highest hills, this medieval fortress could easily be mistaken for a fictional setting from “House of the Dragon” or a fantasy video game. However, far from worlds that exist only in our imagination, the battles fought here were very real, and that is why, centuries later, it continues to captivate both locals and tourists.
This castle dominates the landscape even before you arrive. With a spectacular view of the Tagus River, this picture-perfect scene is also a true time machine. Here, you can travel back to the era of the Muslim occupation, the height of the Middle Ages, and the reconstruction of what is likely one of the most photographed spots in the city.
With admission and an audio guide, you can (re)discover every nook and cranny of this medieval fortress at your own pace while immersing yourself in its centuries-old history through fascinating facts and detailed insights. A simple yet effective way to explore São Jorge Castle and its walls without missing a single thing. The tour includes highlights such as the Tower of Ulysses, the Martim Moniz Gate, and the castle gardens.

São Jorge Castle and Its Many Lives
Human settlement on the hill where São Jorge Castle stands predates the conquest of Lisbon by Afonso Henriques in 1147. In fact, archaeological evidence even points to the existence of a settlement dating back to the Iron Age, in the 7th century B.C.
However, neither during this period nor during the Roman era and thereafter is it possible to determine the nature of the occupation. The origins of the fortifications that make up the current monument date back to the Islamic period: although it is possible that the area was fortified earlier, the first written reference to a wall in Lisbon dates to 985, and 12th-century accounts describe a walled city and a fortified citadel.
From royal residence to renovation projects

It may seem like an exaggeration to say that São Jorge Castle has had many lives, but one need only look at its past to realize that this description “fits it like a glove.” After the Christian reconquest by the forces of Afonso Henriques, the existing fortification came to play a fundamental role in the city of Lisbon. Furthermore, little by little, it began to be transformed to serve as a royal residence and the seat of the court.
During the reign of King Manuel I, the Alcáçova Royal Palace ceased to serve as one of the royal residences, a function that was transferred to the Baixa district of the capital. Since then, the fortress has lost its significance and suffered damage from the tragic 1755 earthquake, which devastated Lisbon from one end to the other. For this reason, there is an interesting fact worth noting: the castle’s current appearance is not the result of centuries of untouched preservation, but rather of a series of restoration projects carried out between the 1930s and 1940s.
A 360° view… and peacocks
From the ramparts and towers, you can enjoy a 360° view of Lisbon, with the capital’s historic buildings, Rossio, Terreiro do Paço, and, of course, the Tagus River standing out. Against this backdrop, it’s easy to see why this fortress played such a strategic defensive role for so long.
With your audio guide in hand, visit the Tower of Ulysses, admire the statues of Kings Afonso Henriques and Manuel I, discover the Martim Moniz Gate (traditionally associated with tales of the reconquest of the City of Seven Hills), and snap photos of the peacocks strolling through the castle. At the end, take a deep breath and feel the weight of the stories that have spanned generations!
