It’s already on September 15, Sunday, starting at noon, that Lisbon will celebrate one of the most versatile fruits of Mediterranean cuisine, which the Portuguese love to put in every recipe, whether in healthy salads or in that “naughty” tomato rice.
The Tomato Festival will take place in one of our favorite places in the city, at Praça no Beato, where we have tasted one of the best brunches in Lisbon.
On this day, which promises to be full of flavors and aromas, you will learn more about this fruit (did you know that the tomato is a fruit and not a vegetable?), but also enjoy the various activities, together with your family.
At the event you will also meet renowned chefs, local producers and even experts, all of whom are committed to promoting and better exploiting the potential of this tasty ingredient, which is present in every Portuguese kitchen.
Tastings, workshops and debates
The main menu highlights tomatoes in their various varieties (Coração de Boi do Douro, Zebra verde, Indigo Rose Golden Berry and Viagem), which you can taste directly from each national producer present at the event.
If you prefer them cooked, the three guest chefs will try to surprise you with their creative dishes, such as Chef Margarida Dias’ Olive Oil Cracker (roasted tomato and confit garlic foam), Chef Gonçalo Ribeiro’s Tomato “Steak” on Salmorejo, and Chef Miguel Castro e Silva’s Tomato Corn with Pork Belly Rojões. Chef Rui Pascoalinho, meanwhile, will be serving delicious ice creams made from various varieties of this ingredient rich in water and minerals.
You can also take part in interactive workshops that will teach you how to create other products derived from this fruit, such as tomato powder or pesto.
For the little ones, Magnolia Method will be organizing a series of activities, such as planting tomato seeds, as well as paintings and collages.
If you’re familiar with the various types of tomato, you’ve certainly heard of the Coração de Boi. Dedicated to this “species” so popular in the north of the country, Edgardo Pacheco, Abílio Tavares da Silva and Jorge Raiado will discuss its importance and special characteristics, culminating in the launch of two books: “Tomate Coração de Boi do Douro – a outra riqueza do vale mágico” and “Tomate Coração de Boi”.
