For starters, this year the Sturgeon Full Moon will shine more brightly on the night of August 8-9, making it a special moment for those who like to observe the skies and/or take photographs. However, it’s not the only event you should pay attention to. But we’ll get to that.

What is the origin of the name of this Full Moon?
According to the Starwalk website, the nameSturgeon Moon was given by the Native American tribes who lived around the Great Lakes.
For many natives, this was their favorite time of year to catch sturgeon – a large freshwater fish, hence the name.

When is the next Sturgeon Moon?
According to the same source, in 2026, the Full Sturgeon Moon will shine on August 28. However, as early as next month, you can look forward to another special moment with the Full Corn Moon on September 7.

Peak of the Perseids meteor shower
The Perseids are one of the most popular meteor showers due to their high intensity, with up to 100 meteors per hour during their peak. Best of all, the peak of its activity is scheduled for the night of August 11-12.
However, although the proximity of a full moon and a meteor shower sounds like the perfect combination, the truth is a little different. This is because, at the peak of the Perseids, the Moon will be more than 90% illuminated, which will affect the visibility of the fainter meteors.
