Imagine the scene: you’re walking through the iconic Terreiro do Paço, where movement and noise are constant—people crossing the square on their way home, tourists on the outdoor terraces, and trams passing by the Tagus River. It’s all happening above ground. But if you head down to the metro station, Lisbon takes on a whole new scale and universe: underground, there’s an immersive experience that takes you far from Earth on the “Smithsonian Journey Through the Cosmos.”
Far from the prying eyes of those who pass through the station daily, the Terreiro do Paço Metro’s Underground Hall “hides” a portal that transports you directly to an adventure among the stars, exoplanets, and black holes. More than just an exhibition, this new production—developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory—is a gateway to an experience of free exploration.

How do you pass through this portal?
To embark on the fantastic world of “Smithsonian Journey Through the Cosmos: An Immersive Experience,” simply look for the “magical portal” located near the metro turnstiles. Here, the concept of “passing through” is replaced by “stopping,” in an adventure that lasts about an hour, with 40 minutes dedicated to the virtual reality (VR) experience.

The organizers recommend that you arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of the session you booked. This gives you time to check in, receive a brief introduction, and set up your equipment. Additionally, due to the need to adjust the VR goggles and for safety reasons, the experience is recommended for ages 12 and up. Visitors between the ages of 12 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
International Cosmic Route
Before opening this cosmic “portal” in Lisbon, this experience had already reached different cities and continents under the name “Smithsonian Starstruck.” The Portuguese capital thus joins the international route of this immersive journey, which is already available in Madrid (Spain), São Paulo (Brazil), Melbourne (Australia), and Washington, D.C. (U.S.), among other locations.
