Portugal is one of the world’s most famous surfing destinations, with countless spots to explore along our vast coastline. However, it’s impossible to talk about surfing without mentioning the Silver Coast and the western region. That’s why we’re suggesting a stunning itinerary about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the capital, combining iconic beaches with a new attraction that’s sure to be the talk of the town.
Known for its rough seas and picturesque fishing villages like Nazaré, the Silver Coast is a destination worth considering for surf fans, beginners, or simply anyone looking to enjoy authentic experiences. The best part? There’s a new attraction in the municipality of Óbidos that promises to enhance the region’s surfing offerings and put the area on the surfing map: Surfers Cove.
Surfers Cove: the revolution in the form of a pool
We begin our itinerary with a recommendation that, although it hasn’t opened yet, is already worth adding to your list of getaways. Famous for its ginjinha and castle — one of the most impressive in Portugal—the municipality of Óbidos stretches toward the sea and now promises to become a “must-visit” destination for all surfing enthusiasts.
Scheduled for late December, the opening of Surfers Cove will bring Portugal’s first surfing wave pool to a location about an hour from Lisbon . Set within a five-hectare complex equipped with Wavegarden technology, it’s capable of generating 1,000 waves per hour. With a variety of different wave types to choose from , there are conditions suited for both beginners taking their first steps in the sport and professional surfers.
To extend the experience and wake up with your surfboard right at your feet, the venue functions as a true Surf Village. Several fully equipped bungalows are available, ranging from studios to one-bedroom units, so you won’t have to head home at the end of the day. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the organizers are running a special pre-sale campaign with discounts of up to 30% for a limited time.
Back to the open sea: Supertubos and the paradise of Baleal
On this second stop of our Silver Coast itinerary, you won’t need to wait for any new surf spot to open, but you also won’t find a spectacular wave pool for practicing surfing like the one in Óbidos. Even so, it’s always worth the trip to the Peniche Peninsula, where you can breathe in the ocean air and the surf culture dominates every corner.
Supertubos Beach (also known as Medão Beach) is a must-see for any surfing enthusiast. It’s also here that the Portuguese leg of the World Surf League Championship Tour takes place , bringing some of the sport’s biggest names from around the world to Peniche.
In this area, another place worth visiting is Baleal and its picture-perfect scenery, where you can stop to relax and have a drink under the dazzling light of the sunset. And while you’re at it, if you can, take a “trip” to the Berlengas Archipelago —a true natural paradise on the Portuguese coast.
Where giant waves reign and records are broken
To wrap up this road trip along the Silver Coast in style, it’s time to head a bit further up the coast toward Nazaré, one of Portugal’s most beautiful villages. After all, this is where you’ll find the world’sbiggest surfable waves, breaking record after record.
Praia do Norte and the São Miguel Arcanjo Lighthouse need no introduction.
