It is now possible to walk along the Calçada da Glória, after the accident with the Elevador da Glória on September 3rd.
However, it was still necessary to provide an alternative means of transport for those who used the accident elevator on a daily basis to get from Restauradores to Bairro Alto (São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint) and vice versa, a situation that CARRIS has made available since September 12.
New circular route in electric minibuses
The 51E route will temporarily replace the Ascensor da Glória (for a few years) with a new circular route using one of the company’s latest fleets of electric minibuses, thus ensuring mobility in Lisbon’s historic center.
The 51E minibuses are operating every day between 7 a.m. and 9.30 p.m., offering a sustainable and practical alternative to all Lisbon residents and, of course, to those who visit us on a daily basis.
According to CARRIS, the new 51E route guarantees a connection to the main tourist and cultural areas of downtown Lisbon and the Chiado area , stopping at strategic points, as you can see in the image below.
The new circular route aims not only to temporarily replace the elevator, but also to improve mobility in the Restauradores-Chiado-Bairro Alto-Avenida da Liberdade axis, areas with a strong tourist and cultural influx.
It should also be remembered that, due to other elevators in Lisbon being suspended, the Bica Elevator is being replaced by the 22B line, which runs between Cais do Sodré and Príncipe Real every day between 7am and 8.30pm, linking Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz.
