It is common knowledge that cabin no. 1 of the Elevador da Glória will no longer run on those rails, which on September 3 witnessed one of the greatest tragedies ever to happen in Lisbon, as it has been rendered completely unusable.
However, CARRIS guarantees that Lisbon will not be without its Elevador da Glória, and that the new “version” will be more modern and with much tighter and more reliable safety measures.
First and foremost, we need to find out the causes of this accident, as well as who (if anyone) is responsible and, above all, ensure that the most effective safety measures are implemented, giving Lisbon residents and our visitors back their confidence in this type of urban equipment, which has become much more than just a means of city transportation.

The future of the Elevador da Glória
According to the current President of CARRIS, Pedro Bogas, the current carriage was completely destroyed in the derailment on September 3rd and is not even recoverable.
In the same statements to the press, Pedro Bogas also said that the company wants to go ahead with the installation of a “new” Elevador da Glória, this time safer and more modern, as soon as all those responsible for the accident have been investigated. He also said that this measure could take a few years to come to fruition.

Until the investigations are complete, so that everyone knows the reasons that led to the 16 fatalities, nothing will be planned, and then the idea is to start thinking about new equipment, and even a mechanical structure that will prevent as many accidents as possible in the future.
This is also why the rest of Lisbon’s elevators and elevators are closed until further notice, in order to check that the safety measures comply with all the protocols.
Although there are still no forecasts for an immediate reopening, something that would be unthinkable while the investigations are carried out, CARRIS’ guarantee is that the city will once again have its Elevador da Glória, and that the investment in new, safer and more modern equipment will be made, although this process may take a few years, once all the technical and safety conditions have been guaranteed.
