The Benfica Fair, which filled the neighborhood with nostalgia until 1987, is finally back. After four decades of absence, the event already has a set date— September 25–27— and this time it will be held (mostly) at Praça do Fonte Nova, promising to bring together several generations from the neighborhood in one place.
Three days inspired by the ’80s and ’90s
The program was designed as a trip down memory lane to the two decades that left a lasting impression on those who grew up in the neighborhood. There’s something for everyone: those who love to dance (Zumba classes and sunset parties with a DJ, both with a retro vibe), those who prefer to browse through vintage items (the trunk sale), or try their luck at retro arcade games, and even those who want to strut their stuff in vintage outfits.
The program also includes an area with board games, exhibitors, street food, and the “Benfica a Pedalar — 80s/90s Special” bike ride, designed to help participants rediscover the neighborhood on two wheels.
Quinta do Bill takes the stage at Quinta da Granja
It’s also worth setting aside an evening to head over to Quinta da Granja. That’s where, on September 26 at 9:30 p.m., Quinta do Bill will take the stage, joined by some unexpected guests: two philharmonic bands from Ferreira do Zêzere, the Associação Recreativa Filarmónica Frazoeirense and the Sociedade Filarmónica Ferreirense. The collaboration between a folk-rock band and over a century of tradition in marching bands promises to be one of the weekend’s most unique moments—and admission is free as well.
It all started with a memory from Nuno Markl
The idea to bring the fair back stemmed from a nostalgic post by comedian Nuno Markl in late 2025, in which he recalled the year 1987: at just 16 years old, he decided to enter the design contest for the Benfica Fair poster, even though he knew little about the field—and he won, taking home a ZX Spectrum 128K as a prize. His poster even adorned the stage where artists like Lena d’Água performed. The article caught the attention of Ricardo Marques, president of the Benfica Parish Council, who contacted the comedian to confirm the fair’s return—on one condition: that Markl agree to serve as the event’s patron. He accepted immediately.
Just as Nuno Markl won in 1987, this edition also featured a poster design contest—and the winner has already been announced: Tiago Coimbra, recognized for his creativity and for the way he captured the spirit of an edition entirely inspired by the ’80s and ’90s.
