Popular Saints’ Day in Lisbon is synonymous with lots of festivities, with street fairs and themed events popping up all over the city. If you’re looking for something different, there’s something new: Gunpowder Lisboa has decided to celebrate Saint Anthony’s Day in its own unique way.
Located in the heart of Chiado, from June 12 to 14, the well-known Indian bistro is offering two exclusive creations that bring together the best of both worlds. More specifically, the tradition of Lisbon’s festivals and the spices and aromas of India.
Sardines and pork sandwiches ‘Indian-style’
There is no Saint Anthony’s Day festival without sardines, but did you know they are also part of the diet on India’s west coast, from Goa to Kerala? Here, the star of the festival’s cuisine is prepared differently, marinated in garlic, chili peppers, cilantro, and curry leaves. After that, it is sautéed and served with tomato confit.
However, this isn’t the only surprise or reinvention, as the traditional bifanas are also getting new flavors. At the Indian bistro, this delicacy keeps the classic recipe but gets a special addition—homemade garam masala in the marinade and sauce. Prepared with two cuts of meat (pork belly and bacon), the bifana is served with pickled cucumbers.
