The Óbidos Lagoon is considered to be the largest lagoon system on the Portuguese coast and is located between the friendly and picturesque town of Óbidos and the city of Caldas da Rainha, in the west of the country.
It covers an area of around 6.9 km² and, due to its calm waters, is a true haven of biodiversity. It is also very popular with water sports enthusiasts , who come to this immense lake to practice sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing, kiteboarding, water skiing and stand up paddle boarding, among other activities, all year round.
The best lagoon for families
The Óbidos Lagoon is also an excellent place to spend a day at the beach with the family, with its shallow waters and the channel that connects it to the sea, often intervened due to natural silting, standing out.
The wide stretches of sand and the various picnic areas on the shores of the lagoon are some of the main advantages of this lagoon over others near the capital, which are much more restricted and have more “complicated” access.
In the summer months, there is also the possibility of renting the typical “gaivotas” to enjoy a large part of the lagoon, where you can also find the traditional “bateiras “, which are the typical boats used by fishermen and shellfish gatherers in this lagoon.
Environmental wealth
The Óbidos Lagoon is very rich in a variety of aquatic birds, especially migratory ones, and its native vegetation is very well preserved, especially in the Braço da Barrosa area, making this lagoon a very special destination for wildlife watching and nature walks.
A final highlight is the award it won in 2023 in the category of Tourist Destinations: Regions, at the Art&Tur Festival 2023.
It’s no coincidence that the Óbidos Lagoon remains one of the most protected heritage sites in the country, capable of satisfying any type of adventurer, from the biggest holidaymaker to the most peculiar lover of pure nature.
