Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe, so it’s not surprising that from north to south you’ll find countless enchanting castles. For those who love stories of (re)conquest and the Knights Templar, here’s a suggested trip: Monsaraz.
Located around 180 kilometers from Lisbon – almost 2 hours by car – this is one of the most beautiful medieval villages to visit in the heart of the Alentejo. In 2017, it was voted one of the “7 Wonders of Portugal” in the “Monument Village” category... and now it’s time to set off to (re)discover it.
A brief historical context
Set high on a hill and surrounded by an impressive wall, the small town of Monsaraz is the perfect destination for those who appreciate history, tranquillity and natural beauty. There, you can feel the vibrations of yesteryear and imagine the various duels fought in period movie style.
Although today it belongs to the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the district of Évora, this picturesque medieval town was the seat of the municipality until the 19th century. But its past began to be written long before that.
It is said that there are traces of human presence during prehistoric times . However, it was during the Middle Ages that its existence took on a new vigor. Due to its privileged location overlooking the Guadiana and close to the border area, it was a town coveted by Moors and Christians alike.
In fact, Saris or Sarish – as the town was known in Muslim times – was first conquered from the ‘Saracens’ in the 12th century. However, after the defeat of King Afonso Henriques at Badajoz, Portugal temporarily lost possession of it until 1232 during the reign of King Sancho II.
What to visit in Monsaraz
After the definitive reconquest from the Moors, the small town in the Alentejo came under the authority of the Knights Templar, and traces of their presence can still be seen today. With such a remarkable legacy, Monsaraz is a kind of time capsule.
To start this journey, you have to leave the car outside the walls. After all, there would be no other way to admire its narrow cobbled streets and white houses than to ‘wander’ at a slower pace; to the rhythm of the heart of the Alentejo.
Although it’s not a very big town, there’s plenty to visit within its impressive walls. First of all, we’d like to highlight the panoramic view of the blue Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe.
And now we share a short list of recommendations:
- Monsaraz Castle: the local ex-libris, built by King Dinis
- Portas da Vila: four historic entrances to the town – Porta da Vila, Porta de Évora, Porta da Alcoba and Porta do Buraco
- Fresco Museum and House of the Inquisition
- Medieval cistern: the main local reservoir with access to a panoramic terrace
- Monsaraz Pillory
- Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa: home to the tomb of a ‘legendary’ Templar, among others.
Beyond the medieval aspect…
Despite the fact that this is a true medieval jewel, the truth is that there is more to it than just the historical side. For example, Monsaraz is also a destination to consider for those who enjoy traditional cuisine (such as migas and lamb) and good Alentejo wines.
In addition, not far from there you can enjoy the summer pleasures of the Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz. And to make things even more idyllic, this area is perfect for stargazing. After all, Dark Sky Alqueva is just 20 minutes away.
So, whether you want to travel back in time and feel the tranquillity of the countryside, or cool off on the river beaches while waiting for nightfall to gaze at the firmament, Monsaraz really is a jewel waiting to be (re)discovered!
