Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are two of the most eagerly awaited moments for kids and adults alike, but they are also a time of great bustle in the city. That’s why many locals choose to travel by public transport.
In this sense, it’s important to know what timetables are in force, especially at a time when there are adjustments to operations. So, to make life easier for people from Lisbon and beyond, we’ve prepared a brief guide with information about the Metropolitano de Lisboa and Carris Metropolitana, as well as other practical tips.

Lisbon Underground

According to information on the official Metropolitano de Lisboa website, this year the service will close later over the Christmas period.
Therefore, “on December 24 and 25, trains will run until 1 a.m. on December 25 and January 1, respectively, resuming service at 6:30 a.m. on those same days,” reads the Metro’s website.
Carris Metropolitana

Carris Metropolitana has also announced adjustments to its circulation on December 24, 25 and 31, and January 1. However, all the timetables are available on its officialwebsite.
To do this, simply go to the ‘Search lines’ menu and enter the desired line and final destination, choosing the date on which you want to check the changes. Even so, we’ve decided to put together a brief summary of some of the information available to the public.
Area 1 (Amadora, Cascais, Lisbon, Oeiras and Sintra):
- December 24 and 31 – with traffic interrupted from 10pm (with some exceptions that can be consulted in the “Search lines” menu).
- Lines 1626 and 1733 with special timetables on December 24 and 31, with service resuming on December 25 and January 1 at 7 a.m.
Area 2 (Loures, Mafra, Odivelas and Vila Franca de Xira):
- December 24 with service interrupted at 9 p.m.
- December 31 with traffic ending at 10pm
- December 25 and January 1 with service starting at 7:30 a.m.
- Exceptions on lines 2213, 2523, 2525, 2750, 2762, 2764, 2715, 2769, 2772m 2796, 2812, 2831 and 2833
Area 3 (Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra):
- December 24 with interrupted service at 9 p.m.
- December 31 with service interrupted at 10pm
- December 25 and January 1 with traffic resuming at 7:30 a.m.
Area 4 (Alcochete, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela and Setúbal):
- Service interrupted at 9 p.m. on December 24
- December 31 with service interrupted at 10pm, but with the following exceptions: lines 4600, 4602, 4604, 4701, 4702, 4705, 4707, 4708, 4710, 4715 and 4720 (operating at their normal times to ensure connection to Barreiro Terminal and Lisbon)
- December 25 and January 1 with traffic starting at 7:30 a.m.
Timetables for navigating spaces
- Services closed on December 25 and January 1
- December 24th with doors open until 2pm
- December 31st open until 6pm (except Odivelas where it closes at 3pm and Alverca at 5pm).
Chiado without cars

This weekend, Chiado will be closed to traffic to increase pedestrian safety and free movement during the Christmas season. According to Lisbon City Council, the restrictions apply from 10am on Saturday to 11.59pm on Sunday, covering emblematic streets such as Garrett and Nova do Almada.
“Leave the car behind and celebrate Christmas”
Lisbon City Council is also promoting the “Leave your car behind and celebrate Christmas” campaign, which will take place on December 26, 27 and 28.
As such, free parking is guaranteed in the EMEL car parks at Campo Grande and Universidade, where there will be an exclusive, free Carris shuttle leaving every 30 minutes until 9.30pm from Campo Grande and 10.30pm from Restauradores.
