The Chiado area is one of the busiest in the capital, especially at Christmas time. Therefore, in order to increase pedestrian safety, but also to allow free movement, this area of Lisbon will be car-free for the next two weekends.
According to a press release from Lisbon City Council (CML), quoted by various media outlets, the traffic restrictions will come into force from 10am on Saturday until 11.59pm on Sunday.
However, residents can rest assured that access will be guaranteed, as will loading and unloading between 6am and 10am. However, this isn’t the only ‘news’, as the “Leave the car behind and celebrate Christmas” campaign is back. But first, let’s take a look at the restricted streets.
Which streets have traffic restrictions?

According to the information shared, traffic will be restricted on the following roads:
- Rua Garrett
- Rua Nova do Almada (from the intersection with Rua de São Nicolau to Rua Garrett)
- Rua Ivens (from the intersection with Rua Capelo to Rua Garrett)
- Rua Serpa Pinto (between the intersection of Rua Capelo and Rua Garrett)
- Calçada do Sacramento (between Rua Garrett and the intersection with Rua Almirante Pessanha)
Free parking and exclusive shuttle
In addition to this measure, and with the aim of making it easier to travel to the city center, CML is once again promoting the “Leave the car behind and celebrate Christmas” campaign, which runs this Friday and over the weekend, as well as on December 26, 27 and 28.
As such, free parking is guaranteed in EMEL’s Campo Grande and Universidade car parks, where there will be an exclusive, free Carris shuttle leaving every half hour until 9.30pm from Campo Grande and 10.30pm from Restauradores. Parking will also be free at the EMEL car parks in Alcântara and Avenida de Pádua.
